Dursley Rugby Football Club
Colts win and submit alternative match report
21st November 2016
Well more a case of a skilfully controlled, rumble in the mud between willing protagonists.
A frenetic start to Sunday following a night of apocalyptic rain, an early morning decree by His Chairman-ness Smillie that the clubhouse pitch was unplayable and a late, late cry off by the Crypt-dwellers who were to have been the U17 opponents for the day - but ‘every cloud……..’ as they say. A flurry of calls between izinDuna Lloyd and Reeves saw the happy coming together of the two bands of brothers to face local rivals, Corinium Dobunnorum in this Cup future defining battle.
Induna Lloyd’s morning impossibly improved following most welcome news that up and coming GLADREF whistle-blower, A.G-E, having recalculated the driving time between his last posting and The Bowl, would now be able to officiate.
News from Coach Reeves that food and beverage duties were in hand thanks to the ever organised and capable 17’s support crew adding further gloss to an already glistening day for Coach Lloyd. It would seem all the unexpected gloss had the effect of upsetting Coach Lloyd’s well-worn pre-match routine with delegation of the vital scorer’s role overlooked. Having self-delegated (and abrogated) the duty it must be confessed this report bears none of the accuracy of previous reports and is reconstructed from the players own recollections of their exploits on the day.
Recollections (of a grammatic integrity that speaks volumes for the state of local schooling) follow:
* For the sake of historical accuracy the C Major try that wasn’t
** Redactions necessary for the protection of backs move calls
A welcome return to ball striking form saw Batman convert 3 and narrowly miss 3.
For the visitors 4 tries scored and 1 conversion.
Final score 36-22
This was a game of quality played at pace with some exceptional handling by both sides given the conditions. Defence around the fringes was resolute and determined and contest at the breakdown immense. Coach Lloyd overheard declaring ‘rugby the winner’ for the second week on the bounce. Thank you Cirencester for your part in a fine game played in great spirit.
To A.G-E a very well managed game – our thanks.
Mentions of the Week to Joe Fearless and Dupe Squared. Joe, you had an outstanding game in attack and defence (your pass for Ciren’s 3rd try was a triumph of timing!) – 3 tries a fitting reward for your Braveheart effort. Jared, your defensive effort on the day was Herculean – after a 2 year absence welcome back we are delighted you are home.
With 10 tries scored on the day, the final, if misguided, word of this latest, if alternative, report must go to Frankie ……………… ‘ One is all that you can score (score no more, score no more)
