Dursley U13s vs. Stow U13s : County Cup Qualifying Round
19th February 2006
Match Date: Sunday 19th February
Visitors Stow faced a resurgent Dursley squad, playing at home in their next round of the County Cup games.
Starting with determination, the home side drew first blood within a minute, thanks to a breakaway try to No.8 Jon Turner. Stow did not lose faith however and a period of good defensive work saw Dursley having to remain content camped in the Stow half. Repeated attacks by the front row forwards, Elliot Dessi, Owen Turley and hooker Simon Thomas eventually gave Turner his second breakthrough try.
Stow’s options were reduced to kicking deep at every opportunity, but they hadn’t counted on Dursley fullback Cam Balfour’s ability to run back at them; a quality that deservedly won him a joint player of the week award. He shared this with scrum-half George Dolling, who ably demonstrated he could handle the pressure when he put his mind to the task.
Another Turner try to Dursley took them well into the lead, but the next to winger Max Medlow, returning from ‘retirement’ to help out the squad, summed up the team spirit on the day. His burst of pace down the wing sailed him past three Stow tacklers to cross the line.
Stow came back with two easy tries either side of the half – much to the disappointment of the home fans, but it was the wake-up call Dursley needed. Two more tries to Turner, followed by one to flanker Seb Fraser, driven over the try line by the pack, finished the game off in style. Conversions to centre Jos Chillingworth and flyhalf Ryan Malpass gave Dursley a grand total of 41 points to Stow’s 12.
Dursley take a weeks rest with coaching at the club on the 26th Feb - but return to their County Cup campaign with an away fixture against Bristol on the 5th March.
