Dursley U9 V Bath RFC and Cleve

Dursley U9’s rugby team travelled to the famous Recreation Ground, home of Premiership club Bath on Sunday to play against both Bath RFC and Cleeve RFC. With Bath cathedral towering above them, the boys and girl of the under 9’s had a sneaky look at the 1st XV pitch before the action started on the grounds alongside the stadium.
In the first match Dursley Lions played a determined Bath side who were particularly adept at peeling from the rolling maul. The Lions played their usual fluid style of rugby and this very nearly paid off in the first minute with a flowing move that ended in touch by the corner flag. A try on the stroke of half time meant Dursley went into the second half on the back foot. They didn’t recover from this blow and the final 25-5 scoreline, with a try from Kieran Hemming, didn’t reflect the effort they had put in.
The second game saw the Tigers take on Bath’s B team. A brilliant display from Christopher Colston meant the Tigers were never headed and they ended they game 25-0 winners with 3 tries from Colston.
The Lions then got their chance to play Cleeve and put in a bravura performance that much better reflected their commitment and abilities. A captain’s performance from Finlay McCubbin, with 3 tries, inspired the Lions to play some of the best rugby of the day. Further tries from Joel Sherratt, Tom Caesar and James Taplin gave the Lions a brilliant 30-10 win which was widely applauded by the travelling Dursley support.
Dursley’s final game saw the Tigers turn on the style against Bath’s A team. Yet more tries from Colston put the Tigers in to the distance and further scores from Callum Christian and Edward Paddock gave them a deserved win. The Tigers were also superb in defence with Edward Paddock, Silas Winterbottom, Callum Christian and Jospeh Moore always committed in the tackle.
Dursley’s reputation for Champagne rugby continues to grow. Player of the Day trophies went to Mason Jakuta and newcomer Ewen Southwell while Christopher Colston was also rewarded for his dazzling display of dancing feet and balance.
