High Wind, High Tempo
The massed ranks of the Dursley RFC faithful gathered on Minchinhampton common to see the Under 13s do battle against Minch RFC. Unfortunately the players and supporters were also joined by Hurricane Glenda, and even the barking voice of Coach Lloyd could not counter the effect of the chilling breeze. The boys took to the field resplendent in new shorts as their new 2011/12 kit takes shape in instalments. Apparently they get one sock next week, and the final sock the week after. Dursley RFC branded jockstraps expected sometime in January!
There was also early muttering in the crowd about the disappointingly bland nature of the referee’s shirt which was certainly below par for the season, and hearing this the Ref decided to inject some colour into his decision making instead. Chief Refereeing Assessor Patteson was never short of an assessment from the sidelines.
So to the action. Quarter 1 dominated by Dursley saw them take the lead through a Tom Kinnear try (unconverted) after wave and wave of attack. Like a deft backhand cross court dropshot he might have seen his father demonstrate he nimbley dodged the Minch tacklers before finishing rapier like in the corner. The strength of the forwards already on show and the shift handling by the backs were both features of the morning’s play. Dursley would have run out the winners in Q1 were it not from some swift wing play by Minch who capitalised on a poor Dursley penalty to equalise. 5-5. Quarter 2 was a similar story with Dursley dominating throughout and Shea and Henry M dominating the forward play. Minch scored a breakaway try to take them 10-5 up but this did not reflect the domination Dursley exerted.
Quarter 3 was a largely similar tale with Dursley dominating only to concede a try against the run of the play and trail 15-5 at the final break. Q4 saw Minch score again to extend the lead before a sloppy clearance from the Minch back line fell to Darryl 50 yards from goal. He patiently waited for the advancing forwards before lighting the turbos and heading off down the left wing. Not even roadrunner could have matched his pace and he crossed the line for a deserved try, Beep Beep. And so the match ended 20-10
But this brief report does not do justice to the spectacle we witnessed. Dursley were the far superior rugby side, their forwards dominating against a larger pack, and backs repeatedly running impressive moves in attack.
