Disappointing loss for 1st XV
2nd November 2011
Dursley travelled to Bream for the second time in a matter of weeks to try and get revenge for the cup defeat just a couple of weeks ago.
Bream started the stronger and applied good pressure but the Dursley defence held firm. Bream continued to pressure and only a good tackle into touch from Gareth Udal followed by another strong tackle from Alex Budd prevented a certain score. However the Bream pressure was finally rewarded when they crashed over after a long period of time in possession. The conversion was missed making the score 5-0. After a good kick off Dursley were unlucky to knock the ball on and from the resulting scrum Bream broke up the pitch and after some quick recycling of the ball scored their second try in a matter of minutes, once again the conversion was missed. This seemed to change the Dursley player’s mindset and the work ethic was better. Good pressure from Simon Camm won a penalty and from the resulting lineout Dursley came up just short. Dursley now had the wind in their sails and a good break from full back Matt Billett appeared to keep Dursley on the front foot. But it was Bream who actually converted their chance to go three tries ahead. Making the score 17-0, and it looked a long way back for the Dursley boys. But to their credit they kept their spirits high and would not give up and were rewarded with points before half time from the boot of Billett, reducing the deficit to 17-3. It was clear the intent of the Dursley team when a smart box kick from scrum half Jack Pearce lead to a bone crunching HIT from second row Scott Udal followed up by good tackles from centres Joe Atkins and Max Pullin. Dursley were not going to lie down and would come out for the second half fighting.
This continued in the second half with more good tackles from firstly Jake Martin and then Jack Robson on numerous occasions. Dursley seemed determined to make sure Bream knew they were in a hard second half. Sensible kicks from fly half Tom Pinker and Billett kept the Bream team pinned in their own 22 and this Dursley pressure was rewarded when Billet slotted his second penalty of the day to make the score 17-6. Dursley looked right back in the game and there was a clear momentum shift, visible from the sideline. Dursley kept the pressure on and strong yards made by Udal and Atkins were not quite enough. Dursley kept knocking on the door but a mixture of good Bream defence and the lack of clinical finishing from the Dursley team, set the score not to change. And it remained 17-6, another disappointing defeat for Dursley in a more than winnable game.
Coach Andrew Sharp: It was a lot better but still very disappointing to have lost.
Star Man: Scott Udal
