County Cup Qualifying Round
Playing away from home, Dursley faced Bristol in their last County Cup qualifying game. Dursley needed the win to progress into the Cup quarter finals, and did so – with room to spare.
Starting well, No.8 Jon Turner took the first points smashing through the weak Bristol defensive line to touch down. Outside centre Callum Williamson went on an attacking run to provide the next, swiftly followed by one to winger Paul Wetherall, after a turn of pace down the openside channel. Two to inside centre Joce Chillingworth, outpacing the tacklers with ease and one to lock Booth dropping over the line from a 5M ruck, left the opposition trailing. Wetherall then took his second to give Dursley a 37 point lead to no reply at the close of the first period.
Unless something went horribly wrong, the second half was unlikely to be much different to the first and the visitors did not disappoint. Seb Fraser, now playing on the wing, opened the scoring, with Chillingworth completing his hat-trick immediately after. One more to Fraser and two more to Turner looked likely to be the final score, but not before Williamson took yet one more. Three successful conversions to Chillingworth sealed a 71-0 record victory for the squad, who’s performance although not technically perfect, did reflect a fine team effort on the day.
Player of the week awards went to hooker Simon Thomas and prop Tom Walpole, for their determined efforts in securing ball in the loose at every opportunity.
