This Sunday 4th October saw the 1st of Dursley RFC's two mini rugby Festivals. Sunday's event was for U7, U8 and U9 age groups with teams from Longlevens, Hucclecote, Stroud, Painswick, Malvern, Minchinhampton, Cirencester, Thornbury as well as the Dursley squads taking part.
The fine weather encouraged some very exciting and skillful Rugby with large numbers of tries from all age groups to thrill the crowd. Wayne Lucas, Chairman of the Minis and Juniors section at DRFC commented; "
Our own Festival has now become a key event in the county rugby schedule and gets our season off to a great start every year. After the rain and chill winds of last years event, it was wonderful to see the sun shining on over 400 boys and girls entertaining us all and enjoying their sport."
Each age group event provided strong competition. The U7 final was contested between Malvern and Minchinhampton with the latter coming out winners by 3 tries to 2. The U8s final was an even closer affair.
Thornbury took on Minchinhampton in a closely matched game, the score at full time standing at 2 tries apiece. The match went into extra time with Minchinhampton winning with a Golden Try after 90 seconds.
The Under 9s final was won by a very strong and well-drilled Longlevens side, the Gloucester club overcoming Minchinhampton by 5 tries to nil.
Keeping with it's inclusive policy and promoting the emphasis on enjoyment and participation, every player received a Festival medal as a momento of the day, while both winners and runners up walked away with impressive trophies to mark their success.
Dursley RFC would like to thank all their sponsors without whom such events would not be possible and the club now looks forward to the second Festival for U10, U11 and U12 age-groups on Sunday 18th Oct
