DURSLEY RFC REMEMBER ONE OF IT’S OWN
7th September 2008
A grand total of 71 players took the field on Sunday 7th September for a match in memory of Stephen ‘Shoddy’ Sheldon who died tragically in July at the age of 19.
Watched by a large crowd of friends and relatives, the game was played between what more or less amounted to a Dursley u20s side versus Dursley Nomads (3rd) team – the u20s side being made up predominantly of players from the age group in which Shoddy played his junior rugby, and the Nomads being the senior team for which Shoddy played most. Other players included relatives and friends.
The match was played in great spirit as befitted the occasion, with the many rolling substitutes keeping the referees counting skills up to scratch!
Enjoying a welcome respite from the recent rain, the dry weather inspired some exciting rugby. It resulted in a score line which was a lot closer than many expected, and with honours even at 4 tries each, the u20s won narrowly 24-22 having kicked one more conversion!
Everyone present agreed that it was a fitting tribute to a popular young man who is sorely missed by many people.
