Dursley RFC – U15’s Tour Report
1st April 2008
Tour Dates: 21st – 24th March 2008
Venue: Holland
In their first tour to foreign soil, Dursley RFC U15’s travelled to Holland for a long Easter weekend break.
With a mix of matches and tournaments during the day, plus evening entertainment at the Walibi World Holiday Park, the players had a vibrant weekend of activity.
Saturday brought a visit to RC Pink Panthers, a local rugby club with a predictable logo and pink playing shirts. Playing a combination squad from the East of Holland first, Dursley played well with three tries to Match Award Winner Mike Beswick and one to his centre pairing Tyler Davies. A single try to the Dutch side resulted in a 26-5 win for Dursley.
Playing the hosts next, Dursley went on the attack again, with opening tries to wing Ollie Meikle and fullback Jos Chillingworth. A second-half try to flyhalf Ryan Malpass ended the day 19-7, but not before Beswick caught a serious ankle injury, ruling his tour and season over.
After a fantastic evening of food and song provided courtesy of the Pink Panthers, Dursley took the field again on Sunday in the Hilversum Tournament. Playing Lincoln ‘A’ team first, a tight competition saw a 0-0 draw at full time. Wheatley, near Doncaster were up next. As the eventual tournament finalists, Wheatley were not given an easy match by Dursley who managed to defend their quarter, losing just 10-0.
A final game against the tournament hosts RC Hilversum was a much better affair, with a try to captain and Tournament Award Winner Tom Walpole and another to centre Ed Wooldridge. The final scoreline of 12-5 reflected the Dursley efforts. With the Match Ball being presented to flanker Rory Chappell for his team contributions around the field and off, the Dursley U15’s team can be proud of a tour well played.
The coaches, players and parents would like to pass best wishes to Mike Beswick, hoping he has a speedy recovery. Also to Harry Bramwell and Seb Fraser, both recovering from major injuries from this tough season.
