Dursley returned to winning ways with a solid performance against Brockworth in a Glos 1 league game. In perfect conditions the match sponsored by Cellar Supplies provided good entertainment for the large crowd.
Kicking off downhill the maroons made their intentions clear taking the game to the visitors. Several big tackles from Tony Niblett and Andy Plumridge rocked Brockworth back but Dursley were penalised for offside. From a lineout in their own 22 fly half Simon Lane put in a super clearance kick into the Brockworth half and from the ensuing ruck Dursley gained a penalty for offside and full back Stef Hawley slotted the ball over the posts to lead 3 – 0.
Brockworth were offside at the kick off and centre Robbie Winchle gained good position with his penalty kick.Dursley were dominating and Winchle and Jak Evans combined well but a loose pass went to ground. Brockworth worked the ball up to the halfway line and were awarded a scrum for a knock on. The maroons scrum half TJ Case pressured his opposite number and the ball shot out of the scrum , Case kicked through picked up the ball and rounded the full back passed to supporting Winchle to score, Hawley adding the conversion to lead 10 – 0.
Dursley knocked on at the kick off and the visitor’s number 8 picked up from the scrum, Niblett was on hand to force him into touch.Brockworth were awarded a penalty at the line out but missed with the kick. From the drop out the visiting centre caught the ball and Captain Andy Scott put in a huge tackle turning the ball over. Rich Brooks and Ben Dix secured the ball and fast hands from Matt Billett enabled Brad Winchle to break down the wing, but the full back tackled him into touch.Brockworth used their forwards to drive the ball up the pitch and Robbie Winchle was adjudged to have hands in the ruck, he was given 10 minutes sin bin and Brockworth kicked the penalty to trail 10 – 3.
Brockworth pressed the Dursley line but could not take advantage of the extra man, Case and Evans combined to clear a loose ball, and Brooks went on a charging run out of his half supported by Mark Perry. The ball came to Lane who chipped the ball into the Brockworth 22 forcing a clearance kick. From the lineout Evans kicked the ball into the corner and the chasing Billett was unlucky not to score. Now back up to 15 players Dursley took possession and Brad Winchle went on a run into the Brockworth 22 where he was dump tackled. Hawley added 3 points from the penalty to lead 13 – 3. The maroons went back up the pitch from the kick off and were awarded a penalty 10 metres into the Brockworth half. Hawley then produced a superb kick to add another 3 points and a half time lead of 16 – 3.
In the second half Brockworth tried to use their big pack with repeated pick and drives, but the home pack resisted well. The visitors had a couple of penalty attempts missed and produced a flowing move deep into the Dursley half; Billett produced a try saving tackle on his opposite number. More pressure followed and Winchle put in a big tackle to turn over the ball. Play was brought back for a mystery penalty to the visitors and Dursleys defence was sucked in allowing the Brockworth winger to score and reduce the lead to 16- 8.
Dursley settled well and were dictating the game and kept play in the visitors half. The maroons won a scrum against the head on Brockworths 22 and were awarded a penalty for hands in the ensuing ruck.Hawley slotted the ball over to complete a convincing 19 – 8 win for the hosts.
Captain Andy Scott said `We knew we had to perform today and nobody let us down. Our pack are punching well above their weight and this is what is setting the platform for our backs to exploit. `
Dursley entertain league leaders Bristol Saracens next week but will be losing Winchle, Hawley and Winterbottom to the County Under 20 team.
