Dursley travelled to St Mary’s anticipating a tough encounter against last season’s County Cup winners and were not disappointed.
St Mary’s large, well drilled forwards put Dursley on the back foot from the kick off. To their credit, Dursley quickly gathered themselves through some excellent work from their tight forwards with the front row of Evans, Belton and Hall competing well against some powerful opposition. Following a period of play when nothing separated the two teams, St Mary’s big forwards managed to sneak a try down the blind side from a scrum ten metres out. Just before half time, a ruck on the home side’s 22 metre line allowed scrum half Pinker to put Balham into space. He used it superbly, dummying the centre and going through to score. This left the half time score at 5-5.
The second half saw driving runs by Allsopp, Leonard-Waters, Evans and Hall but good defence by St Mary’s kept Dursley out of their 22. Similarly, any attacks by St Mary’s were quickly snuffed out by Dursley’s defence, with Hugginson taking every inch of advantage he could get away with. A fantastic tackle and turn over by Balham saw Burns pick and drive down the field; he released the ball to the back line, who spread the ball wide to Allen. Allen followed his aggressive run with a kick and chase, putting Dursley in their opponents 22, the full back was caught and Dursley pressurised the line but could not convert the pressure in to points. Then, it was St Mary’s turn to hit back, a text book attack saw their full back cut through to score a very well taken try, giving us the final score line. Following their excellent win against Old Pats a fortnight ago and this narrow defeat against the County Champions, Dursley can look forward to this year’s County Cup campaign in the New Year with optimism.
