Dursley remembers David Wakefield and Ian Unsworth
4th March 2022
We are saddened to report the deaths of two past players in recent weeks;
David Wakefield was a founding member of the Third Team ‘the Nomads’ in the late 1960s. Like many of that team he was old but talented and turned out regularly at full back until age eventually caught up with him. Together with others, under the captaincy of Stan Baldwin, the Nomads became an important part of the Club with a great social elements and well as memorable on the field performances It was at this time the Club moved to the Stragglers. David, who was an architect, was often consulted on development to the Club premises. Our condolences go to his family
Ian Unsworth moved into the area to teach at KLB. In the early 1970s he played for several season as the first team scrum half. Together with his fellow teacher John Mapstone, who was a centre, they contributed both on and off the field to the development of the Club. Ian was a solid and skilful scrum half always prepared to take on the opposing forwards. After rugby he became an accomplished and notable bell ringe. Condolences to his family
