Dursley Rugby Football Club
Welcome from the Chairman
The heatwave gives way to rugby fever!
The 2018/19 season is now upon us! Welcome back and I hope you are ready for the new season.
After the glorious summer weather it will be interesting to see how the grass has coped as we move into the rugby season, and we are very grateful to Pete and Ant Atkinson for their hard work during the summer. It’s been a real challenge to maintain cricket, running and rugby surfaces during the dry weather.
As you will see, the summer has been an opportunity for us to continue to improve the clubhouse and facilities along the lines consulted on last year, with the new kitchen having been installed. This includes a new serving hatch directly onto the deck will help improve queues and make it a lot easier to get drinks and food. We are grateful to the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust (GET), and the RFU for the grant support of this work, which has topped up our own funds.
I am delighted to say that work has also started on the new entrance to the clubhouse direct from the changing rooms – this will make it much easier for people to navigate their way around the club between the changing rooms and clubhouse. Once the entrance is complete, the next step is to install a disabled toilet and baby change area in the main clubhouse – so please bear with the slight clutter and mess in the lounge area at the start of the season as this work continues.
So all in all a busy ‘off season’ (!) which will hopefully make your time spent at the club a better all round experience!
There has also been a lot of sporting activity going on – with touch rugby, pre-season training, running club sessions and cricket all making good use of the space.
So all in all a summer to build on:
In the next 2 weeks the senior and mini & youth sections of the rugby club will start their seasons, welcoming new and old players alike.
The Dursley ‘Does’ Women’s team will be starting their new league campaign after their successful re-entry last year after a long time away from league rugby.
The Dursley Men’s teams will be starting their cup, league and friendly fixtures during September. It’s been good to see a lot of the older youth players training with the senior players during the summer, and we look forward to seeing them transition into men’s rugby as the months go by.
And the mini and youth teams have their usual packed schedule of training and fixtures to look forward too, as well as the festival weekends on 30th September and 14th October.
As always, new players for all sections are welcome, so please encourage anyone interested to give rugby a go.
As ever at this time of the season, we are indebted to the many and various volunteers who give up their time as coaches, team managers, captains, committee members etc as well as those who help out either constantly or occasionally behind the bar, on the car park, in the kitchen and elsewhere – my thanks to you all - without them none of the above would have happened, or be happening.
If anyone would like to know more about you can help be more involved in the running of our club – please do get in touch. There are plenty of opportunities to do as much or as little as you like.
