Dursley travel to Clifton

March 15th 2010

Dursley U9s had a mixed morning at Clifton, but again showed that they can be competitive with the strongest U9 teams around.  Overall, Dursley drew two of the four periods played, with narrow defeats in the other two.

The morning started very well with a tight game where Dursley showed their defensive capability to soak up early Clifton pressure.  Eventually their lines were breached though and Clifton drove home.  The lead didn't last for long, as Lillie Wadey showed her usual strength when running with the ball to find a gap and power through for a one-one draw.

Games two and three saw Dursley appear to lose focus for spells of play and the visitors were always on the back foot, often losing out in the breakdowns.  The flow wasn't helped by the distraction of a helicopter landing on the adjacent pitch for medical attention to an older player from Lydney.  Thankfully he was eventually back on his feet though, with no serious damage, and the U9s got underway again.  Clifton were able to take advantage and put together some neat passing and running for four trys without reply.

Dursley re-galvanised for the final game of the day, and put up a much better display, with some good possession in the middle of the pitch, with the first Player of the Week Elliott Orchard and Dominic Stephenson always involved.  Tom Hearn was the star performer though with some very solid tackling and a couple of jinking runs with the ball.  Indeed it was Hearn that scored a fine try for Dursley in this game to secure their second one-all draw of the day and earn himself a well-deserved Player of the Week award.
