Courageous Dursley lose cup qtr final with spirited performance

March 15th 2010

Widden Old Boys under 14's entertained a strong Dursley team in a great match on Sunday the 14th of March. The Dursley side were in good spirits despite missing several experienced players and knowing that their talented opponents would be tough to beat on their home ground.

The match began with Widden making all the running. Despite some great cover tackles from Dursley full-back Joe Morgan, Widden scored and converted an early try. The home team continued to exert a lot of pressure on the visitors and scored 3 more tries in the first half. At the turn round, Dursley were trailing by 24 points to Nil.

The second half saw play even out and Dursley soon gained momentum and began to play the fast, flowing rugby that supporters and players have been used to over the last few months. The team rallied and scored a well deserved try. The score came from a penalty on the half way line which Dursley, knowing that they needed to play unpredictable rugby to stand a chance of winning, gave to Joe Morgan to run through the Widden team - which he did and a brilliant try was scored. Arron Lennard converted.
The Dursley squad sensed they had a chance to get back into the game and were on their way for more tries when Widden scored against the run of play. This shook the new-found confidence of the Dursley team, but they got back in control of the game soon afterwards and quickly scored a try to compensate, thanks to Callum Reeves. This too was converted by scrum half and Captain, Arron Lennard. The Dursley team never took their foot of the pedal from that point onwards, and scored again near to the end of the game. A penalty had been taken quickly and left the team fighting for the ball at a ruck in the corner of the pitch and in the jumble of hands, James Bird, in his first game back from injury that had left him out for nearly the whole season, put the ball down. The conversion went wide, but Dursley had put in a valiant effort and had substantially outscored Widden in the second half.

However, their disappointing first half came to haunt Dursley as at the final whistle the score was 29-19 to Widden, knocking the hardworking Dursley side out of the County Cup at the quarter final stage.
