Dursley come close
January 26th 2010
Opposition: Old Cryptians U17’s
Venue: Old Cryptians - Gloucester
Score: 20 Old Crypts - 16 Dursley
Date: Sunday 24th January 2010
Despite running out a poor second place in the previous weekends match against Cheltenham, Dursley RFC showed significant improvement in their encounter with Gloucester side Old Cryptians at the weekend.
Flyhalf Ryan Malpass provided the opener, with a penalty slotted between the uprights from just outside the twenty-two. With Dursley picking up two injuries to key players in the pack, Crypts came back with a try to close the first half.
With Crypts pulling ahead with another early in the second period, it looked as though Dursley were following a similar pattern to the previous week, but poor discipline by Crypts under extreme pressure at the ruck from flanker Josh Bailey and captain Tom Walpole gifted Dursley’s Malpass with two more penalty kicks. With both bisecting the uprights Dursley closed the score to 12-9.
The home side pulled ahead once more, but Dursley’s multi-tasking winger come flanker,Joe Jepps, retaliated with a try between the posts. The conversion by Malpass now took Dursley within one point. End to end action followed in the closing minutes, with Dursley trying to pull ahead, but it was Crypts who took the final points with a dubious penalty.
The final scoreline of 20-16 reflected the quality nature of the game, with a vast improvement made by the Dursley side. The Stinchcombe squad now looks forward to this Sunday, when they face old adversaries Thornbury in the key local derby to watch.
